Opening day, gun season, for white-tailed deer on the Reed Ranch was a big success for hunting member Emmett Clemons. On Saturday, October 1st, this heavy racked buck stuck his head out a little too far and Emmett (aka Bubba) fired a well placed kill shot.

This buck was aged at 5 1/2 yrs and dressed out at a healthy 135 lbs.

Congratulations Bubba!,,way to go!

Fawn Study Being Conducted By Reed Ranch Hunting Club Members!

Twin Fawns - Photo Taken In Reed Ranch Big Food Plot!

Reed Ranch Fawn!

The results of summer deer census surveys of the doe/fawn ratios' on the Reed Ranch were lower than expected, so a special study has been initiated to confirm the results. Confirmed results of fawn counts are important because they represent the future of hunting quality in coming years and greater opportunities for big bucks!

Reports from club members (from 16 sightings/reports of 87 doe and 52 fawn) give a fawn-to-doe ratio of 60% - or about 1.7 doe per fawn. This is considerably different than the fawn-to-doe ratio of 22% - or about 4.4 doe per fawn - that appeared in our summer deer census counts. Several twin fawns have also been reported by the club members. Thanks to all the Reed Ranch hunting club members for your willingness to help out! Ya'll did great!

Hunting Club Member Fights to the Death - Knife Fight With Reed Ranch Hog!

Victorius Hunter Shows Off Dead Hog and Kill Knife
After Fight to the Death !

B.C. Davis, Reed Ranch hunting club member, was suprised when he was attacked by a wounded hog on opening day of deer season. This attack occured after, what was considered a kill shot, a careful aim failed to produce a dead hog.

A knife fight to the death was finally won by the 6 ft 3" 300 lb hunter. This tough hog was killed after a battle that lasted over 200 yds of the Reed Ranch's south pasture!

During this intense battle, the hog was beat with B.C.'s "out of ammo" gun and the hog ran off with B.C.'s knife! B.C. was quoted at the campsite as saying "That was my dad's knife and that hog really made me mad. I wasn't gonna let him get away with it!".

It's hoped that wintering birds on the Reed Ranch will be in better shape because of the new timed feeder that's been installed and being maintained by MsJudy and olJim. The platformed setup and the visiting birds can be viewed from the Reed Ranch treehouse that overlooks the high hill just east of the campsite.

More photo's to follow! It's hoped that this'll present even more great opportunities for bird photography and viewing!

Read All About It: Reed Ranch Uses Holistic Goal Setting - TPWD Wetlands Assistance Guide!

Read all about the Reed Family Ranch's use of holistic goal setting in olJim's update of the article that appeared in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Wetlands Assistance Guide for Landowners! One of the outcomes of this goal setting process was the wetlands enhancement plan that the ranch is using to increase ecological diversity even more! This article has been updated and placed on the ranch website, so you can read, too. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for the great guide. The photo to the left is an aerial photo of bearman lake, the most recent water control structure project that's been completed in cooperation with the East Texas Wetlands Project.

Hangin' of Ol-Timey Long Rope Swing at Reed Ranch Campsite- Big Success!

Granddaughter Kaylee Swingin' the Long Roaps

Some of you may be old enuff to remember the long roap swings that hung from neighborhood trees and captured the attention of young'uns for hours! Yep, you don't see many of those around anymore. That's the reason one of those ol-timey roaps swings has been hung on one of the monster oak trees at the Reed Family Ranch campsite. Youth, kids, grandkids, (and wannabe kids, too) all love it!

The time honored tradition of "who can throw the roap high enuff?" was upheld by son James, who finally looped and tied the two long suspension roaps. Already - there's been many hours of swingin' and pushin' fun - with grandkids yelling "higher-higher!".
