Annual Deer Counts Scheduled To Begin on Reed Family Ranch in July!
|
Jeremy With His Harvested Spike! |
Annual census counts of white-tailed deer are scheduled to begin again on July 15th. These counts began on the Reed Ranch in the mid-1990's and continue to give us excellant resource management information.
From these counts, we get projections on the level of deer harvest that's needed to keep white-tailed deer numbers in line with the habitat level that the Reed Ranch provides. We cull deer regularly to keep our buck/doe and doe/fawn ratio's in line with our hunting decisions.
When these counts are compared with deer harvest data, we can make better decisions about how best to manage this valuable resource!

High Bluff on the Banks of the Trinity River at the Reed Ranch! |
KERA (the public TV station in Dallas, Texas) has produced a Trinity River Website to share and discuss issues related to this important resource. Videos, photos, and a discussion forum highlight KERA's effort to bring more focus on how we relate to this ancient waterway. Thanks KERA!
Brush Busters Program Considered for Use on Woody Growth at Reed Family Ranch!
The Brush Busters Brush Control Program - developed by Dr. Allan McGinty of the Texas Agrilife Extension Service and Dr. Darrell Ueckert, Texas Agriculture Experiment Station - is now being considered to help sculpture the hill area at the ranch.
At this point in time, the density of woody growth on the hill is not in line with ranch goals for a diversified habitat - and consideration is now being given to initiate a program to bring things more in line with ranch goals for both wildlife habitat and grazing by cattle.
Hunting Club Membership Begins "Keep It Clean" Project!
The Reed Family Ranch campsite will take on the new focus of "keep it clean" - by its new policy of "what you pack in - you pack out".
It's hoped that the maintenance of the campsite will become easier and we can all continue to be proud of the looks and upkeep!

Fathers Day June 21st!

Join us in wishing all those Dads out there a wonderful and Happy Fathers Day!
Remembering what a father once told his son when they were first gazing down at the son's first born at a local hospital.

Be On the Lookout. Reed Ranch Critter, You've Been Spotted! The SWAMP RABBIT can be found in poorly drained river bottoms among the tangled shrubs, trees, and vines. It is well adapted to a semi-aquatic habitat and often is found in the water, crossing rivers and streams or hiding beneath overhanging vegetation.
The swamp rabbit locates its fur-lined nest in a hollow log or stump when possible. If no such shelter is available, the nest is constructed in a surface depression like that of a cottontail. Two or more litters per year, with two to three young in each, are usual.
Newborn swamp rabbits have characteristics of both rabbits and hares. They are fully furred like the jackrabbit, but their eyes are closed like those of the eastern cottontail. When their eyes open in two or three days, the young are able to leave the nest and soon are on their own. Be on the lookout for a sighting of a SWAMP RABBIT at the Reed Family Ranch!
