Two Additional Hunting Club Spots to be Added for 2008-09 Hunting Year!

We wanted everybody to know that it's been decided that two additional hunting club member spots will be added for the 2008-09 year. Spots in the Reed Family Ranch Hunting Club are usually filled in January of each year. Those of you who are already on our contact list will be contacted in January '08 about whether there's still interest in club membership or not.

For those of you who'd like to be added to our contact list - or would like more information, please make contact with oljim reed at oljim@reedfamilyranch.com.

This coming season, the white-tailed deer season (gun and bow) on the Reed Family Ranch begins on September 29, 2007 and lasts through the end of January 2008 - AND the duck hunting oughta be superb!

Sure am looking forward to another great hunting season. We're a'gittin' ready. Gonna be a good one!

Report on First 2007 Night Deer Count Held Saturday Night August 4th!

Reed Ranch club members JimmyG Reed, Ashley Fugate, Charles Lovelady, Chuck Brown and son Ryan Brown completed a good night count at the Reed Ranch on Saturday night, August 4th. Thanks to JimmyG, Ashley, Charles, and Chuck for helping out! You did great!

A total of 34 white-tailed deer were counted over the approximate 6 mile night count route. Along the way, 3 buck were identified, along with 5 doe and 3 fawns. The remainder deer were counted, but no one could determine what gender and size they were for sure.

This 34 deer count figure compares with last year's 2006 night deer counts - which produced counts of 44, 35, and 43 deer seen.

The next night count is scheduled for Saturday night, August 18th. The crew that's identified to be doing the counting will be JimmyG and Ashley, and club members David Rape and son Travis. Thanks to everybody for all your help and hard work!

White-Tailed Deer Census Surveys Being Conducted Now!

Our annual deer counts are now underway and are scheduled to last through the end of August - or until all the counts have been made.

Current plans are to do three night counts (the results of which will be used to estimate acres-per-deer density) and enough daylight counts to view about 200-225 deer. The results of the daylights counts will be used to estimate buck/doe and fawn ratio's.

The Ranch will use this figures to determine the numbers of doe and mature buck to be taken during the deer season. This keeps the white-tailed deer population in line with habitat carrying capacity - and we enjoy some great hunting at the same time!

We're now enjoying the results of our deer management program that began way back in the early 1990's! The 2006-07 season was a banner season - and we're hoping for even better hunting in 2007-08!

It won't be long now til opening day comes rolling around again. The white-tailed deer season (both gun and bow) begins on the Reed Family Ranch on Saturday, September 29th and lasts though the end January 2008!

Butterflys Galore!

Wow! The last time I was out at the Ranch, I don't believe I can remember seeing so many big, healthy butterflys. Loved seeing 'em!!

As you can see by the pics, all kinds of butterflys are hitting the purple-topped thistle plants this time of the year.

Take a look....and check out even more of the butterfly pics that were taken!

New Fence Being Built Around Mesquite Flats!

The new fencing around the outside of the mesquite flats area is well underway and is almost complete. Lots of hard work has already done and things are going well.

Special thanks and appreciation go to fence builder Randy Nanny, and also to JimmyG, JimmyK, and Wade for all the great work. Take a look at some pics of some of the building efforts.

The mesquite flats and no-man's land area is a portion of the Reed estate family land transition plans - with son JimmyG and daughter Traci becoming owners of land adjacent to the bulk of the ranch real estate.

Both JimmyG and Traci are now making plans about how best to continue on land ownership and land stewardship efforts.
