Happy Holiday Season From The Reed Family Ranch!

The Reed Family Ranch wants to wish everybody a warm, spirit-filled holiday season and Thanksgiving Day. Wow!We sure do have lots to be thankful for.

Here's wishing everybody the best for a healthy and fun holiday season!

Hunting Club Report - Reed Family Ranch Deer Season!

We're now in our 7th week of deer season on the Reed Family Ranch. As of the date of the scheduling of this newsletter, there's been a reported total of three trophy buck, one cull buck, three doe, four hogs, , and a coyote taken by hunting club members - with lots more being spotted!

The ranch received thirty TPWD doe permits for this season. Three doe have been taken so far this year - so, we still have twenty-seven doe permits to use before our hunting club season for white-tailed deer ends on January 31st, 2008!

After the end of January, the hunting club will move into hog and varmint hunting full-force! We sure are proud of our hunting club - it's bout the best around!

Be On the Lookout! Reed Ranch Critter, You've Been Spotted!

The STRIPED SKUNK is about the size of a house cat and can weigh from 6 to 14 lbs. It has well-developed anal scent glands that can emit a highly unpleasant odor when the skunk feels threatened by another animal.

It usually begins its search for food at dawn or dusk and most commonly feeds on mice, eggs, insects, grubs, and berries. Mating occurs in February or March, and - by early May - a litter is about five to six young are born. The young are born blind, and follow their mother until late June or July.

Be on the lookout for a sighting of a STRIPED SKUNK roaming out and about on the Reed Family Ranch!

Reed Family Ranch Duck Season Now Open!

Duck season officially opened on November 3rd and - with a good amount of water all around - hunters are expecting the conditions to be so good that not even hunting pressure will push 'em out.

Because of some late summer dryness, some of the sloughs and wetlands began to dry up, but (unlike last year) the soil moisture will still be there - so the ranch's sloughs and wetland areas oughta begin filling in a hurry when more rains come.

Wildlife biologists are reporting that "It may be in November or December, but by the first week in January, we will have 75 to 80 percent of the birds from the Central Flyway".

The dates for duck season this year are November 3rd through November 25th - and December 8th through January 27th. Projections are that this oughta end up being a pretty good year for duck hunting!

Lush Vegetation, Big Buck, and White-Tailed Deer Habitat!

Big Buck Caught on Reed Ranch
Game Cam!

According to recent TPWD reports of the Post Oak Savannah area of Texas (where the Reed Ranch is located), "the vegetation is lush and thick, providing more cover and making deer harder to spot. The increased amount of forage and mast will allow deer to move less and bed down early. Also, better overall range conditions (both in hill land and bottomland) will spread the deer over larger areas and not concentrate them in the bottoms and other prime habitats".

Other hunting observations by wildlife biologists include:

"We've got a tremendous acorn crop and they're not going to be cleaned up early-on. In most areas, the acorn crop should remain until - at least - mid-November".

"It's extremely hit or miss as far as the corn feeders go. Maybe by the rut, deer will be coming to feeders, but it's expected to be a very shaky".
