Reed Family Ranch Controlled Burn - Completed!
South Pasture Burn!

About 100 acres of Reed Ranch pasture land has been burned since the last newsletter. The conditions for the burn were excellent and everything went according to schedule. The timing for this burn had to be re-scheduled from the planned date of February 2009, because of the Navarro County burn ban - which was removed in mid-March.

The three areas that were burned included the south pasture, the horn lake drainage area, and the horn lake spot!

Fresh New Grass Growth Returns After Controlled Burn!

Some of the reasons for controlled burns such as this are:

to stimulate grass growth and return nutrients to the soil!
to improve grazing conditions!
and, in the long run, to
make the ranch habitat more beneficial to wildlife!

Reed Family Ranch - Spring and Wildflowers A'Coming!

Some mighty pretty wildflowers are now being seen on the ranch. Wow!..Spring (and the Spring rains) - bustin' out all over! The ranch received about 4.8" of rainfall in the month of March which (along with all the sunlight) is producing an abundance of plant growth!

Here's some photos of some of the ranch's beautiful wildflowers taken from OlJim's photo albums. Nature is showin' off!

Be On the Lookout. Reed Ranch Critter, You've Been Spotted!

The male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER is a medium sized bird that has a red cap and hind neck, black and white barred back and tail. Their belly feathers are off white with a reddish tinge. Females are similar to males but lack the red hind neck.

Red-bellied and other woodpeckers are important nest providers for many other species. The holes they excavate in dead trees, poles, and fence posts are used by bluebirds, wrens, and chickadees to name just a few. It is important for many bird and animal species that we leave dead trees whenever it's safe to do so!

Much of the time, we humans feel that dead trees are dangerous and remove them. This reduces the number of places that woodpeckers, and all the other wildlife that count on them for homes, can live.

It takes only 7 to 10 days for a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers to carve a home in a dead tree. Red-bellied woodpeckers will occasionally use bird houses. These woodpeckers have been known to store food in hollow trees. Their diet consists of insects, nuts, fruits, and berries.

Be on the lookout for a sighting of a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at the Reed Family Ranch!
