Reed Family Ranch: Scheduled Controlled Burn Postponed Because of Navarro County Burn Ban!

A controlled burn on the Reed Family Ranch that was being planned to take place during the first part of February has been postponed due to the burn ban enacted by Navarro County personnel. This approximate 100 acre burn was scheduled for the south pasture and horn lake drainage area.

Controlled burns in February have been used in the past by the ranch to stimulate grass growth and return nutrients to the soil. It is hoped that these burns will result in improved grazing conditions and make the ranch habitat more beneficial to wildlife in the long run.

There have been two previous burns on the ranch in the past - and good results have been seen each time. More information about this will be seen in future editions of this newletter!

Spots Filled: 2009-10 Hunting Club Membership - Gonna Be Another Great Hunting Year!

January 31st marks the end of the 2008-09 hunting club membership year. All the available spots for hunting club membership for 2009-10 year have been filled!

Hunting club membership spots are filled from a list that's maintained for use in making contact with everybody that's expressed an interest in joining the Reed Family Ranch hunting club.

During the end of December - and the first part of January - everybody on this list is contacted about whether they're still interested in a club membership spot. Also, during this time, current club members were contacted about whether they plan on coming back for another year.

The 2009-10 hunting club membership includes year-round access to the ranch for club members - and also, new arrangements have been implemented for club member guests for hog and varmint hunting.

Arrangements for membership in the hunting club can be found at the Reed Family Ranch Hunting Club web page. Questions about club membership are invited and can be sent to OlJim at oljim@reedfamilyranch.com . We're looking forward to hearing from you!

We sure are looking forward to the 2009-10 year - oughta be another good one!

Be On the Lookout! Reed Ranch Critter, You've Been Spotted!

The reclusive BOBCAT is active largely at night, although they frequently leave cover and begin hunting long before sundown.

Their diet consists mainly of small mammals and birds. Among the mammals, wood rats, ground squirrels, mice, and rabbits supply the bulk of the diet. Although deer occasionally are killed and eaten, most of the deer meat found in Bobcat stomachs has been carrion.

The breeding season begins usually in February, and after a gestation period of about 60 days the two to seven young are born. Average litter size is three. The young are well-furred and spotted at birth; their eyes open in about 9 days. The kittens are weaned when about 2 months old. They remain with their mother until early fall, at which time they begin to fend for themselves.

Be on the lookout for a sighting of a BOBCAT roaming out and about on the Reed Family Ranch!
