OBSERVERS: __________________________________________________________________________

The purpose of night counts is to determine the number of acres per deer and also to help identify herd composition. The result of these night counts are combined with the results of the day counts to determine overall information for harvest recommendations.

Use the same survey line as previously established. The night counts should be run exactly the same way each year. They can begin after the mid-part of July and about one hour after sunset. Attempt to make a minimum of 3 counts at about one or two week intervals. By doing this, the night counts should be able to be completed by the end of August or the first part of September. Avoid running surveys during rain or heavy overcast, during periods of winds or the arrival of a northern, or if there has been some type of disruption during the day when the count is planned. Binoculars must be used when identifying deer so drive slow and keep noise to a minimum. Observations should be made using hand held spotlights, at least two observers should be used. Record the number of deer you see for EACH MILE and total at the bottom.
