Definition of the Whole:

Because of our circumstances, we feel our whole must be defined at two levels.

First, since we are in our second adulthood stage of our lives (over 50 age group), we must define our whole in terms of our overall lives (in which the ranch is only a portion).

And,

Second, for that portion of our lives that is associated with the ranch.

First, Jim and Judy Holistic Goal:

Quality of Life:

- to live a life of freedom, flexibility, good health (mental, physical, and spiritual), personal growth, financial security, and the creation of opportunities for the well-being of others
- to build further on our sense of security as we age
- to develop a healthy life style with a balance of work, play, and learning

From an estate planning perspective

- we want to be remembered in a loving way, while maintaining our independence to the extent possible, with little to no burden on others as we age, and receive a pain-free, celebration type death when the time comes
- we value a well-organized, sustainable list of assets, which we feel comfortable about spending down for our own enjoyment and passing on as many assets as possible, while maintaining a plan for little to no estate taxes at passing
- we have agreed to pass on Peters family assets and heirlooms to Jimmy Gene and pass on Reed family assets and heirlooms to Traci, James, and Jimmy Gene
- we wish to pass on holistic management principals to future Reed family generations and eventually turn over the operational aspects of the ranch to others, who demonstrate the ability to retain the focus on holistic goals and holistic management principals
- as we age, we want to maintain our physical exercise and retain mobility, and increase social connections; while moving toward even more increased freedom and flexibility

Production:

    - associate with open-minded people with fresh ideas and thinking processes
    - be involved in learning and traveling experiences and seminars that offer other opportunities
    - making the type of decisions that give us freedom and flexibility; saying no to opportunities that tie us down, and saying yes to opportunities that support our goal of freedom and flexibility
    - sharing the ranch with others that enjoy the same things we do
    - using the ranch as a learning laboratory to learn new things and develop a spiritual connection with nature
    - using the ranch to pursue activities that enhance our physical and mental fitness
    - scheduling activities and daily review of those activities in line with our holistic goal
    - ensure that both Judy and Jim are involved with ranch activities in ways that enhance our partner relationship
    - head in the direction of decreased expenses and low input costs for the ranch, and allowing others to take on responsibilities in return for their use and enjoyment of what the ranch has to offer
    - make decisions that move us toward our 14 year timeline, in terms of 2010 decision year, our 2010-2012 transition years, and our possible 2012 move to a new career

    From an estate planning perspective

    - our wills will be kept in line with our holistic goals. In addition to our wills and powers of attorney's documents, we will both maintain "5 wishes" living wills and supplement this with a set of near-death and death instructions on video tape
    - we will maintain a special instructions to Charlie (our financial planner) and Lary (Jim's brother) regarding the handling of our estate assets and personal belongings, which will help the family deal with this aspect of our estate
    - to relieve the family of the burden of compiling a complete list of estate assets, we will continue to maintain adequate up-to-date estate and financial records for use at our deaths - our wills shall contain the following language "If agriculture ranch property is contained within any or all of the trusts named herein, the trustee of the trust(s) shall recognize the influence of holistic management principals as promulgated by the Allan Savory Center for Holistic Management, and shall give due consideration to the ranch's holistic goal as understood by the Trustee." More specifically, the use of concensus building techniques (led by a Certified Holistic Management Educator) and the use of the seven testing guidelines (as documented by the Allan Savory Center for Holistic Management) shall be an integral portion of the management of any ranch(s) contained in the trust(s) named herein.
    - we will work together to identify and develop our residence (home) in line with our values and landscape description (our environment)
    - a list for both the Peters family heirlooms passed on to Jimmy Gene and the Reed family heirlooms to be passed on to Traci, James, and Jimmy Gene will be compiled and maintained
    - we will continue to focus on our own health and welfare through the YMCA exercise and social programs
    - we will encourage Reed family participation in holistic management classes and utilization of holistic management principals in their own lives
    - 2010 will be the target date for turning over the operational aspects of the ranch to others who demonstrate the ability to retain the focus on holistic goals and holistic management principals
    - to the best of our ability, we will treat others in a fair and loving way and demonstrate love for others
    - as we age, we believe our lives can be enhanced through the continued use of communications technology

Environment (Landscape):

    - thoughtful consideration and the planning of activities which are derived from our goals; family consensus building and seeking input from friends, neighbors, and HRM contacts; monitoring and projecting net worth figures based on income, expenses, budget projections, and capital gains
    - traveling in our motorhome and traveling in general to see more of this country and other countries

    From an estate planning perspective

    - during our final days, we wish to feel loved and be nutured by those who care about and love us; with little to no burden on the enjoyment of their own lives, and pass on without burdening those who love and care for us with little to no stress or guilt, and with as little as possible interference with their own lifestyles or relationships with their own loved ones
    - we hope to continue to communicate and share time with family and friends as long as possible, while working and sharing outdoors time on the ranch together with our family
    - we wish to continue our presence on the ranch as long as possible, to come and go as we please, and be involved with ranch planning and monitoring after 2010
    - when our family and others who care about us realize what our wishes are, we believe those wishes will be carried through
    - during our final days, we want a life-view of personal satisfaction, peace of mind that we did the best we could, and pride that we accomplished and experienced life to the fullest

And, Second, Reed Ranch Holistic Goal:

Quality of Life

    - to build, organize, and create useful things while focusing on learning, personal growth, and profit
    - to build a healthy environment for ourselves in terms of physical fitness, spiritual growth, and healthy relationships with others
    - to be free to work with only those who are healthy to be around (no jerks allowed)
    - to create things that are meaningful and fun for us, and to produce opportunities for others to have more meaning in their lives
    - to maintain a life of freedom and flexibility and provide the opportunity for our family to be involved with the management of the ranch if they choose to
    - to have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful, peaceful setting with clean water and air
    - to learn and develop from a personal standpoint, so we can contribute to our society and our environment
    - to give our family the opportunity to learn, work, grow, play, and share in a natural environment
    - to offer a hunting enterprise which is diversified and well-organized, reputable and friendly, for both club member hunting and other types of hunting; with well-communicated, posted rules, and management information shared with other hunters to provide a safe, responsible hunting experiences
    - opportunities for various family group member's enterprises within the ranch's operations

From a cattle operation, fencing, forage, and water distribution perspective

    - the cattle operation is used both for economic benefit of the cattle operator and the ranch. The ranch uses the cattle operation in a holistic way to improve the land, enhance the wildlife habitat and develop the natural water resouce. We value the wooded areas, prairie grasses, wildlife habitats and water reservoirs, and want the cattle to be used to further enhance these valuable resources. In order for the cattle to be use effectively, the fencing and water distribution system must be operational and used with planned grazing according to forage recovery times. Designated areas such as wildlife habitats, hunting spots, aesthetic and social areas, and watering areas should be given special attention
    - we value a good reputation based on sound holistic principals. We want the perception of the ranch by others to reflect our values. Unless planned otherwise, the interaction of the cattle with guests and hunters should be minimal with the handling of the cattle being the responsibility of the operator of the cattle business

Production:

    - to use the ranch as a laboratory for building, organizing, and creating useful things while focusing on learning, personal growth, and profit
    - to produce a sense of satisfaction with a return on investment from both an economic standpoint and a personal value standpoint
    - to create a self-sustaining environment in which the owner can be absent for periods of time without obstructing the work that is needed to maintain and operate the property
    - to support the quality of life we desire and to be involved in enterprises that are profitable and/or will increase the net value of ranch assets. This profit or gain may come from livestock, recreation, services, hunting and fishing, or any other enterprise or investment that does not harm the quality of life we seek
    - will produce an aesthetically pleasing environment that provides open space, solitude, clean air, and water
    - schedule regular family group meetings to practice communication skills by reviewing where we are in our plan and how our family group feels about the progress
    - schedule outings with friends and family on a regular basis
    - ranch personnel acting in a professional manner, focusing on a cooperative, open-minded attitude while moving toward the overall goals of the ranch; striving to continually improve for fun, profit, and added value to the ranch; focusing on improvements and maintenance; scheduling through a calendar of activities; use of holistic budget planning; using email and website for efficient communications; use of photos for hunting enjoyment
    - to support (financially and otherwise) family enterprises which are in line with the goals of the ranch; adoption of family enterprise business plans and how they fit into the overall operation of the ranch; including of other family group members into existing enterprises; including such enterprises as (but not limited to) livestock production, hunting, family markets, crawfish farming, organic products, breeding of horses, chicken tractors, fishing and utilization of river resources, primitive camping and hosting, use of the ranch for family outings, day and weekend camping, outdoors experiences, and ranch tours. Arrange for visitations to other ranches for ideas and fun, and have family group workdays for organizing things and getting to know one another better.
    - to utilize what the steps the family has adopted for conflict management (1st step) the people involved attempt to work it out on their own face-to-face (2nd step) judy and/or jim becoming a mediator (3rd step) remainder of family group attempt to mediate and (4th step) professional mediation. Utilization of the HRM seven testing guidelines to be used throughout.

From a cattle operation, fencing, forage, and water distribution perspective

    - in order to operate the ranch effectively, a ranch grazing plan must be operation and utilized. A visual representation of the movement of cattle in line with other ranch activities will be used to communicate the grazing plan in a way that other ranch activities can be planned and operated. The cattle will be moved in a way that gives due consideration to other ranch activities; and ranch activies will be planned in a way that gives due consideration to the movement of the cattle.
    - besides using the cattle to improve pastures, fire will be used as a tool for pasture and grass improvement. A prescribed burn plan will be done before any burns take place for risk management purposes. Adequate tools and equipment are necessary to contain and monitor planned burns for the ranch
    - a plan will be utilized to separate and buffer the guest area from the cattle working pens. Isolating cattle needing medical attention will keep odors and sick/dying/dead cattle away from guests. Fencing around the social gathering areas will be used to separate the cattle operation from the social areas. An overall check of the ranch will be done before each guest event to reduce the risk of possible cattle interaction problems
    - the educating of both hunters and guests in introductions to the ranch and hunter meetings will help them understand the risks and responsibilities that they have concerning the cattle

Environment (Landscape):

    - Bottoms and Pasture Areas: will maintain the natural beauty, wetlands, and wildlife habitats which are as natural and profitable as possible with a minimum of technology used
    - Wooded Areas: will be managed in a way which are healthy, sustaining, and profitable from both a timber and wildlife management standpoint
    - Hill and Pasture Areas: soil surfaces will be covered with litter and growing plants; soils will be covered with a mixture of grass, forbs, and shrubs. Areas of brush and forest will be maintained to support a diversity of wildlife. Capture of solar energy will be high and use of water resources will be efficient.
    - Hunting Resources: healthy wildlife habitat; safe hunting equipment and facilities; designation of hunting management areas; healthy wetlands and hill land; and attention paid to responsible transportation around the ranch; and maintenance of wooded areas for the benefit of wildlife; ordering maintenance and upkeep of camp area.
    - Diversified enterprises, well-organized and well-communicated, profitable, fun and enjoyable, everyone working together and sharing in a free, open, and creative atmosphere

From a cattle operation, fencing, forage, and water distribution perspective

    - we would like to see lush diverse grasses, forbes, healthy wildlife habitats, and aesthetic areas on the ranch. The electric fence and water distribution system is complete and is being maintained as a primary part of the infrastructure of the ranch. Cattle are being moved according to a grazing plan with little to no need for fossil fuel consumption for mowing. The cattle are being used to enhance wildlife food plots and native grasses
    - separate cattle pens help with working the cattle and giving cattle needed medical attention. The guest and hunter areas are in a comfortable and maintainable location away from the cattle. The ranch managers strive to retain an educated club membership who understand the responsibilities as they relate to the use and maintenance of the cattle operation and other animals on the ranch
